8 Common Mistakes that will Ruin Your Automatic Transmission

Don’t shift too fast

Many prefer an automatic gearbox over a manual one due to its ease of use and comfort level but there are many mistakes you can do that will ruin your automatic gearbox so pay attention as we explore them

Incorrect usage of handbrake

Don’t use your handbrake unless you are at a complete standstill. Gently lift the hand brake –don’t pull too hard- as that will stop it from getting stuck in the upright position.

Fast shift between speeds

When parking don’t go from D to R or vice versa too fast especially when the car is moving as this will cause damage to the gearbox. Wait until the car is fully stopped.

Shifting while speeding

Don’t shift between speeds (N to D for example) while speeding as this will cause damage to the gearbox over time.

Don’t step on your gas pedal and then shift to D as this is dangerous and will also damage the gearbox

Pay attention to gearbox oil level

Make sure it is always within normal levels and change it every 150,000 kilometres or every three years.

  1. Don’t shift to P before you actually stop.
  2. Don’t park at P as this actually puts the whole weight of the car on the gearbox.
  3. Neutral

Neutral is not always good. Don’t shift to neutral when idling at stop signs or traffic lights. Shift to D instead.
